The
University of Nevada Las Vegas
The University of Nevada, Las
Vegas, (UNLV) which opened its first building, Maude Fraizer
Hall, in 1957, celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2001.
UNLV is located on a 335-acre campus in the heart of Las Vegas.
In addition to the more than 23,000 students enrolled in academic
degree programs, another nearly 19,000 people participate
in continuing education classes at the university. UNLV offers
180 undergraduate, master and doctoral degree programs with
classes taught by the university's more than
700 faculty members.
UNLV recently
moved into the ranking
defined by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of
Teaching as "Doctoral/Research Universities - Intensive."
In addition, the 2001 issue of U.S. News and World Report's
annual America's Best Colleges guidebook, moved UNLV
into the national Doctoral Universities category.
In the fall of
2002, the UNLV School of Dentistry admitted its first class
of students. The dental school, along with a portion of UNLV's
Cancer Institute and new Biotechnology Center, will be housed
at a newly established regional campus located close to UMC
and near downtown Las Vegas.
UNLV works to
partner with government agencies and private industry to find
innovative ways to bring economic growth and development to
our community and state while creating centers of academic
excellence. The university offers major programs in physics,
business, engineering, computer science, biological science,
environmental studies and performing arts. The university's
solid liberal arts core curriculum lies at the heart of UNLV's
educational philosophy and provides a common experience for
all students who earn their undergraduate degrees at UNLV
and the University's William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration
is internationally recognised for its excellence.
University
of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM)
The University of Nevada School
of Medicine is Nevada's only postgraduate institution dedicated
to training new physicians. Its mission is to educate medical
students and residents, emphasizing primary care; deliver
comprehensive health care services to patients; develop programs
responsive to public health needs; help develop appropriate
public health policy; and conduct research and make appropriate
application of findings to patient care.
The School
of Medicine maintains a strong presence throughout the state
with a facility on the campus of the University of Neveda,
Reno, service to rural areas and explosive growth in Southern
Nevada.
The Medical
School, with an $82 million operating budget, is funded by
the state, private donations and federal research grants.
Currently the school conducts $14 million annually in sponsored
research and has a $23 million endowment.
Five new
buildings totaling 105,500 square feet were recently constucted
in Reno and Las Vegas and plans are underway to develop an
academic medical center complex in Southern Nevada.
The Las
Vegas campus focuses on the clinical training of medical students
and 190 residents at its Patient Care and Family Practice
Centers and partner hospitals.
Desert Research Institute (DRI)
A division of the University and Community College System
of Nevada (UCCSN), Desert Research Institute is among the
world's premier research facilities. More than 400 professional
scientists, technicians and staff members tackle complex projects
in various regions of the globe in search of environmental
solutions. Founded in 1959, DRI maintains major science centers
in Las Vegas, Reno and Stead. The organization has conducted
studies in all 50 states and 36 foreign countries.
Community
College of Southern Nevada (CCSN)
Serving Southern Nevada for three decades, America's fourth
largest two-year college is also Nevada's largest institution
of higher education and job trainer in 75 career fields. Based
on three
main campuses and 50 academic centers in four counties, CCSN
serves two-thirds of the states population and has prepared
nearly 800,000 students for the work force.
CCSN specializes
in accounting and finance, automotive, aviation, business,
computing, dental hygiene and nursing, drafting and graphics,
law enforcement and public services, resorts and gaming, teacher
education and telecommunications.
Construction
is underway on a $17 million Sciences Center at the Charleston
Campus to help educate professionals in 20 medical fields
and other high-demand, high-tech industries in 2003. Already
funded and under design is a $20 million Telecommunications
Center for the Cheyenne Campus to expand CCSN programs in
various technologies.
To increase Nevada's
college enrollments and expand computing centers throughout
the region, CCSN pioneered an educational model of shared
college academic and computing centers on high school campuses.
Located in Summerlin and at Western, Pahrump Valley and Green
Valley High Schools, the centers combine traditional classrooms
with multimedia and computing labs.
Grade
Schools
Southern Nevada is home of the
nation's sixth largest school district. Clark County School
District (CCSD) continues to keep pace with the area's rapid
growth through aggressive expansion projects and innovative
programs. Currently one-half of the district's elementary
schools operate on a year-round calendar.
In addition
to the comprehensive education program for kindergarten through
grade 12, the district offers magnet programs at every grade
level. Students at all grade levels generally perform above
the national average in reading, mathematics and language.
The district operates 266 schools which include 16 new facilities
for the 2001-2002 school year. Encompassing all of Clark County,
the CCSD employs more than 27,000 and continues to add more
staff members to accomodate the increasing number of students.
In addition to the public school system, Southern Nevada offers
several private schools. The following are lists of enrollment
in public schools and CCSD's private schools that have a minimum
enrollment of 100 students.
